Program Details

Gustav Mahler Blumine from Symphony No.1

  • Composed in 1884.
  • Originally written as incidental music for the play Der Trompeter von Säckingen and later included as the second movement of Mahler’s First Symphony.
  • Mahler removed the movement after early performances, and it remained largely forgotten until its rediscovery in the 1960s. Today it is often performed as a standalone concert piece.

Dmitri Shostakovich Piano Concerto No.2

featuring Sylvia Jiang, piano

  • Composed in 1957.
  • Written for his son, Maxim Shostakovich, as a graduation piece for the Moscow Conservatory.
  • The lyrical second movement was featured in Fantasia 2000 and has appeared in several films and television programs, making it one of Shostakovich’s most recognizable works.

César Franck Symphony in D minor

  • Composed between 1886 and 1888.
  • Franck’s only symphony and a landmark work of French Romantic orchestral music.
  • The work was controversial at its premiere because of its Germanic influences, but it later became one of the most frequently performed French symphonies and has been used in films, television, and concert broadcasts worldwide.
