On June 18, 2026, Andrew Sewell announced that he will step down from his role at the San Luis Obispo Symphony at the conclusion of the 2027/2028 season.

“It has been an honor and privilege to serve the San Luis Obispo community since 2017 and I am deeply grateful for the many inspiring moments on stage. I believe the time is right and will leave knowing the orchestra is in a strong position. I remain committed to the SLO Symphony through the conclusion of my tenure.” – Andrew Sewell, SLO Symphony Music Director

The SLO Symphony remains committed to the inspiring and high-quality performances that have been standard under Maestro Sewell’s direction. In the coming months, a committee will be formed to find the next music director and conductor, with a public search anticipated to begin in late 2026.

“I have a great deal of admiration and appreciation for Maestro Sewell, both as a friend and for his unwavering dedication to our success over the past nine years. Through his artistic leadership, the Symphony has continued to grow in excellence, ambition, and impact throughout our community, and we are deeply grateful for the foundation he has helped build.

While we will certainly miss his presence, I know the Symphony is well positioned to continue its growth as a cultural leader in San Luis Obispo County. I look forward to the magic Maestro Sewell will bring to the concert hall and our community over the next two seasons, and I am excited to begin the search for our next Music Director as we prepare for the Symphony’s next chapter.” – Stefan Podell, President, SLO Symphony Board of Directors

The 2026/2027 and 2027/2028 seasons will remain under Maestro Sewell’s artistic direction, but as the Symphony prepares for the transition, the 2027/2028 season may feature guest conductors who are candidates considered for the position. His final concert as conductor is currently scheduled for May 2028.
