More than 5,000 miles separate Poland and San Luis Obispo County, but the legacy of one celebrated pianist has bridged that distance for our community.
Ignacy Jan Paderewski (1860-1941) was a virtuoso pianist, composer, politician (Prime Minister of independent Poland after World War I), humanitarian and orator. The Paderewski Festival, which celebrates his life and music, will take place November 6 – 8 at various locations in San Luis Obispo County.
Paderewski was a frequent visitor to Paso Robles between the years of 1914 and 1939. He came to the area for its curative hot springs, frequently staying at the El Paso de Robles Hotel (now the Paso Robles Inn). He became so enamored with the area that he purchased 2,864 acres on Paso Robles’ West Side and established his San Ignacio and Santa Helena ranches. He grew almonds and wine grapes on his property, becoming one of the first to cultivate Zinfandel grapes in California.
The Paderewski Festival began in 1993 with a slate of events that includes concerts, celebrations of Polish culture and history, as well as wine tasting events. The festival was on hiatus from 2003 to 2005, but returned in 2006 under the leadership of the Polish Music Center at USC.
In 2008, the connection between Paso Robles and Poland became official when Paso and the city of Tarnów signed a cultural cooperation agreement, making them sister cities. That same year, Poland’s First Lady visited Paso Robles in a show of support for the new bond between the two cities.
The Paderewski Festival has been supported by numerous organizations in San Luis Obispo County; one notable partnership arose in 2024 when the festival lineup included a concert with the SLO Symphony. “The Festival’s and Symphony’s calendars happily coincided on the same weekend, so that we could jointly stage a concert,” recalled Marek Zebrowski, Artistic Director of the USC Polish Music Center.
This year, the SLO Symphony will be performing at the Paderewski Festival’s Gala Concert. The November 7 “Keys of Grandeur” event at the Performing Arts Center San Luis Obispo will feature Hyunjin Roh, the winner of the 2025 Paderewski International Piano Competition in Bydgoszcz, Poland, performing Beethoven’s Emperor Concerto. The program will open with a rousing Mazurka by Moniuszko, Poland’s great 19th century composer of very popular operas, and close with the emotionally charged Tchaikovsky’s Pathetique.
“There is no doubt that such performances will enhance the cultural life in Paso Robles and San Luis Obispo, preserve Paderewski’s legacy and love for the region, and enrich all who participate in this annual music feast on California’s Central Coast,” said Zebrowski.
