Behind the Screen: How Musicians Earn Their Spot in the Orchestra

March 2025

Have you ever wondered how musicians earn a seat in a symphony orchestra? The process isn’t just about talent—it’s about preparation, precision, and performing under pressure. This May, we’re holding auditions for string players, including the role of Assistant Concertmaster.  Here is a behind-the-scenes look at what it takes to make the cut.

A Fair Shot: The Blind Audition Process

To ensure fairness, our orchestra follows a blind audition process. Musicians perform behind a screen, so the judges focus solely on the sound—not the person. This approach, widely used in professional orchestras, helps eliminate bias and ensures that every musician has an equal opportunity to succeed.

Who Judges the Audition?

Audition performances are evaluated by a panel that includes our Music Director, Andrew Sewell, and selected principal players from our current roster. Their trained ears are listening for precision, musicality, and interpretation.

What to Expect in the Audition

  1. Prepared Excerpts – Musicians will perform selections chosen by the music director and principal players. These include classical composers such as Mozart, Brahms, and Mendelssohn. These excerpts test technique, expression, and style.
  2. Sight-Reading – Candidates may be asked to perform an unfamiliar excerpt, showcasing their ability to adapt on the spot.
  3. Multiple Rounds – Depending on the number of applicants, auditions may be conducted in several rounds, with musicians advancing at each stage.
  4. Professionalism & Preparation – Arriving early, staying focused, and playing with confidence can make all the difference.
